New Gold Medal Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into New Gold Medal Restaurant feels like slipping into a quietly spirited corner of Oakland’s Chinatown where time slows just enough to appreciate the simple joys of an unabashedly straightforward Chinese dining experience. The interior carries the marks of years gone by—worn but welcoming—with an unpolished charm that invites you to focus not on decor but on the heart of the visit: honest, comforting food served with little fuss.
The mood here is unpretentious and steady, a place where the rhythm of service is brisk yet matter-of-fact, allowing the kitchen’s warmth to take center stage. It’s not a setting for small talk or flashy presentations, but rather a practical and familiar refuge when appetites call for satisfying flavors that speak of tradition and homestyle care. Whether the clock has edged late into the night or the early dinner crowd has just settled, there is a calm persistence to the atmosphere, one that draws those who cherish food as a reassuring, grounding ritual.
Here, dishes arrive hot and generous, often showcasing classics like steaming bowls of congee or the comforting embrace of the Gold Medal Wor Won Ton Soup. The roasted meats are a highlight—a tender whole duck or soy sauce chicken that invites sharing and simple celebration around the table. The menu offers a range of well-loved options from crispy noodle chow mein to delicate steamed chicken with ginger and scallions, each plate carrying a subtle but rich complexity of flavors.
New Gold Medal is best savored without high expectations for polished hospitality or trendy ambiance. Its essence lies in the genuine, sometimes gruff human pace and the food’s steady, satisfying presence. This corner spot remains a quiet beacon in Oakland’s late-night food scene, a place to come back to when comfort and familiarity are what you’re seeking under the hum of neon lights outside.

Service is average means you go for the atmosphere and food. Legit, old school, Chinese comfort food open late. No smiling hosts or waiters. Sit your butt down where you can, and get your order straight. The food is very good, tasty and hot. The interior is old, needs a good cleaning, and with the average service - the food stands out. Will be my new goto and would assume parking is bad in day time. I went at 845p which was perfect. Many parking spaces.

Our friend's favorite for porridge. We also ordered crispy chow mein and stir-fried veggies. Tasty and generous portions.

Late night go to in the late night food desert that is Oakland Chinatown, with roasted meats, and clay pot selections and rice plate combinations . Not the spiffiest ambience, and hasn’t been remodeled since it was Sun Hong Kong but for late nice Chinese food, the food is great and if you arrive late enough, there will be plenty of of street parking . I usually get the roast Peking duck and honey walnut prawns.

The waiter was very unfriendly until the very end of our dining. Very stern in responses but the food is excellent and very well seasoned. I loved the food.

This is a locals go-to for decades. From seafood to meat dishes all your traditional Chinese dishes can be found here. Nothing is amaricanized like the panda food. You can’t go wrong with bbq duck, wontons, salt n pepper fried pork chops, chow meins, and even vegetarian options are good here. Lobster and crabs are also delicious. Bring your friends or family here and eat an authentic Chinese meal here. It’s almost a whole in the wall so no need to dressed up. Food is delicious- they made us a couple of vegetarian dishes to order, and the hit the spot. I hope the owner Casey sees this because he walked us to our car as we did not know the neighborhood. What a sweet man. I highly recommend this place
